Thousands of commercial, for-profit radio and television stations offer religious music and messages to millions of listeners daily. Many broadcasters are sponsored by their own religious nonprofit organization, some with an unpublicized church classification to avoid taxes. They urge listener support with on-air appeals, by direct-mail fund-raising letters and collect $$$ via telephone by toll-free 800 numbers to encourage contributors to charge tax-deductible donations to credit cards in exchange for products offered.
