"It Shouldn't Hurt So Much To Be A Pastor" By A.H. Barbee

Format: Paperback, 120 pages
Publisher: Kenosis Books (1991), ISBN 091281229X

Description: This book is intended to offer a strong dose of preventive medicine, guiding those in ministry through some very human perils—the tempatations of their own exalted positions, and the actions of uninformed—and sometimes seemingly unfeeling— members of their flocks. Simultaneously, the book offers encouragement to leadership and other church members, so that the community we embrace as co-heirs in the family of God can be genuinely mutual, grounded in the real needs and talents of both pastors and their people.

"The Psychology and Theology of Religious Crimes"
By A.H. Barbee

Description: This study examines ethical and legal thinking and behavior of members who are a significant segment of the evangelical religious subculture; namely, key personnel of nonprofit media ministries. Inquiry is made into their generally self-created status, assumed expertise, and influence on followers. The work considers religious leaders' use and abuse of systems and people and explores psychological techniques and theological theories that may encourage identifiable criminal conduct. It indicts religious and government agencies for reluctance to investigate, citing this hesitation as suggesting impunity for suspect conduct. Courts are charged with parsing religious beliefs, creating definitions that contribute to problems and rendering decisions that ministries which respect government's religious neutrality and society's diversity do not need to fulfill their objectives.

"Spotting a False Prophet"
By A.H. Barbee

Description: It has never been easy to spot false prophets. If it were, false prophets would not be so successful; few people would be fooled. That, however, is not the case. Since time immemorial false prophets have captured their share of followers. They have beguiled the minds, and detailed the destruction of some of the brightest--having a high intelligence quotient (IQ) has never been the best guard against believing a lie or following a liar.

Support of Commercial Radio Stations by Nonprofit Organizations: A Question of Biblical Truth, Law or Ethics?
By A.H. Barbee

Description: This study speaks to ethical issues and probable legal questions that are raised when commercial radio stations receive their primary income from broadcast time sold to 501(c)(3) nonprofit religious organizations funded by donors whose tax liabilities are reduced by their donations. Areas of conflict addressed include a) possible violations of tax codes which disallow tax deductible funds to enure to the benefit of private parties, b) public deceit created by misrepresenting business as religious ministry, c) loss of taxes to society, and d) the compulsion to replace service and ministry with competitive positioning for audience to meet the demands imposed by dollar-driven stations with a religious format.

How Do Fundamental Christians Deal with Depression?
By A.H. Barbee

Description: This study discusses depression and its etiology, as defined by fundamental Christians. It speaks to theological, hermeneutical, and ministerial problems that emerge when fundamental Christians deal with depression. The concept that each fundamental Christian is a minister is addressed. Questions are raised concerning the impact of theological constructs in the fundamental system and depressed persons. The challenge of Christian integrity and ethics is offered to encourage the fundamental community to examine the preparation of persons in counseling ministries who deal with depressed individuals. Recommendations are made to enhance effective ministry to the depressed by professional ministers and counselors in the fundamental community of faith.
